CARTERVILLE, Ill. — Jesse Perry scored 21 points and Lazeric Jones added 19 on Tuesday night, leading John A. Logan past Mineral Area College 77-74 in the basketball season opener for both teams.
Jones put the Volunteers ahead to stay with a runner off the glass, then sealed the outcome by knocking down 11-of-12 free throws overall, capping a strong effort from the line by the host squad.
Freshman guard Riley Raulston buried four three-pointers while netting a team-high 16 points for the Cardinals (0-1). Drew Thomas added 12 points and returning sophomore Carlton Guyton finished with 11.
Raulston’s second triple snapped a 63-63 tie with 3:15 remaining, but Mineral Area squandered its final lead of the night with three consecutive turnovers down the stretch.
Bobby Peebles made four steals in the contest and his floating jumper with 13:15 remaining gave Mineral Area a 45-38 advantage. Devonte Maymon and Perry each connected from long range to spark the Volunteers’ comeback.
John A. Logan (1-0) scored the game’s first seven points and held a narrow 30-29 halftime lead following a Perry putback.
Thomas highlighted a 10-0 MAC run during the first half with a steal and slam, and Edwin Shorter created a 24-17 margin with a turning jumper.
Demetrius Harris chipped in 10 points before fouling out for the Cardinals, who will face SE Illinois at the Three Rivers Tip-off Classic on Friday evening.
