Local drummer Buddy Iahn and his band has won their first award in Los Angeles, Calif., recently.
The group was nominated and won an award for their song “Heaven in your Eyes” as “Best Rock Single” at the 19th annual Los Angeles Music Awards. They will be handed the award on Nov. 12 at the Avalon in Hollywood. Their award will be given to them by the man who produced Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin.
“This was our first award and it feels pretty good because it was decided upon by the fans. We were nominated by someone who saw our show at the House Of Blues in Hollywood, but the fans were the ones who chose the winners. We were one of five bands nominated in this category. We all attended the voting party at the world famous Whisky A-Go-Go on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood.
“It's where legendary bands like The Doors, Motley Crue and Guns 'N Roses got their start. We spoke with the fans and they decided we were the winners after hearing a sample of “Heaven in Your Eyes,” said Iahn.
The awards show won’t be televised for local fans to watch. There will be a red carpet event at 5 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.
The group found out they won recently through their manager. He sent a text and said “it was official they won.” This is the first award for the band and they are pretty happy.
“Many doors and opportunities will open because this is the first big thing. It’s not just for LA bands. There were acts from San Diego, Canada and throughout the country that were nominated, so it’s pretty awesome,” Iahn said.
The band has a lot of shows lined up in the near future. Two upcoming shows they will be opening for the Atomic Punks at The Brixton in Redondo, Calif., on Oct. 24. They are an early Van Halen tribute band and are really popular, Iahn commented. The day after Thanksgiving they are opening for an 80’s band called LA Guns at The Galaxy in Santa Ana, Calif.
They will be hitting the studio soon to finish their album. They have 10 songs recorded but many of them will be re-recorded and released as their first album. The group writes songs daily, so many songs heard will not be re-released at the moment but will be in the future. Other plans included music awards, movie premiers and other red carpet events they are invited to.
They will more than likely begin touring the West Coast and then work their way back through the country at some point. Iahn commented that he would loved to come back and do a concert in the St. Louis area.
Iahn met his future band members in Nashville while he was trying to make it big in the music industry. He was at a party with a friend and that’s where he met lead vocalist Scott Foster Harris.
After the connection was made the two began work for a new band. Their first time playing together was in Clarksville, Tenn. Two months later they went to the recording studio where they began working on an album. The group moved to Los Angeles in October of 2008.
All the band members have a country background, they have either played or sang country, but when they are together its all rock. The style of their music is described as Led Zeppelin meets the Doors and Pink Floyd.
The other band members are Scott Foster Harris, vocals, Steve Preach, guitar and Cody Duke, bass.
