Still time to 'Help the Hungry'

The Help the Hungry Bake Sale committee is in full swing planning the fourth annual event.

The bake sale helps raise money and food items for the two local food pantries — Ministerial Alliance and St. Vincent De Paul — during the holiday season.

This year’s sale will be held Nov. 21 at the St. Joseph Catholic School Gym with the doors opening at 9 a.m. The bake sale will be from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., with the cafe opening at 8 a.m. for cinnamon rolls and coffee.

“Every year we make a little bit more money than the year before. Our committee doesn’t have a set goal to raise. The need is greater this year because groceries are higher and the cost is going up. The $18,000 raised last year didn’t last very long with the food pantries,” said Chris Landrum, event organizer.

The bake sale has developed into a fun-filled event for everyone to enjoy and help people at the same time. This year will have the same things as years past as well as new events.

The returning events are the cake walk, cafe for breakfast and lunch, free cookie decorating contest, silent auction on themed baskets, the holiday decorating chance for holiday wreaths, a live auction with Mark Toti and the regular bake sale booths.

New events this year include the cooking clergy contest, a best recipe contest and a returning favorite ... the “sugar-free” booth. This year Farmington Mayor Stuart “Mit” Landrum will be baking hot fresh bread to sell at the bake sale.

Organizers will be collecting canned food items at the door that morning. Anyone donating items will receive a 50 cent coupon off their total purchase at the bake sale. 

Last year the Help the Hungry Bake Sale raised $18,170, which was divided between the two food pantries. They also had around 11 different churches  involved in one way or another. Close to 30 different auction items were donated for the event.

For those wishing to donate baked items, the group will be accepting donations from churches, community organizations and members of the community on Nov. 20 after 3 p.m., and on Saturday morning, Nov. 21, from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic School gym.
