Washington-Franklin Elementary School has been awarded the Blue Ribbon Award for elementary schools in the state of Missouri.

“I want to thank the students, teachers and parents, this award is for them. They work hard and it’s not easy to achieve something like this. They should be proud of their accomplishments,” said Angie Winch, principal.

Washington-Franklin was one of eight Missouri elementary schools to recieve the award this year. The other schools are Cedar Springs Elementary, Espy Elementary, Field Elementary, Kennard/Classical Junior Academy, Mark Twain Elementary, Skyline Elmentary, and South Nodaway Elmentary.

The Farmington School Board members recognized Principal Angie Winch and Washington-Franklin School Tuesday evening for the recent Blue Ribbon achievement. Four Washington-Franklin staff members, Prinicpal Angie Winch, Councelor Joan Sullivan, Fourth Grade Teacher Rhonda Byers and Special Services Teacher Lisa Miller and Assistant Superintendant Jeff Williams will attend a meeting in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 3 to receive the award.

Before choosing three staff members to attend, Winch drew the names of teachers who give the MAP tests. However, before names were drawn teachers decided that councelor Joan Sullivan should be one to go. Winch said that Sullivan does the extra things to make MAP testing go smoother and makes it fun for the kids to do their testing. She eliminates a lot of the stress for the teachers.

Winch found out about the award Aug. 31 and the announcement was made public on Sept. 15 during the school board meeting.

In order to be awarded the Blue Ribbon designation a school has to be a Gold Star school and be in the top eight for the elementary level in the state. Last year Washington-Franklin received the Gold Star award as well as Roosevelt and Jefferson Elementaries in the Farmington School District.

The Gold Star schools are the top 16 in the state for elementary or secondary education. Every other year is elementary and the following year the top eight are nominated for the Blue Ribbon award. The nominated schools must have three consecutive years of making the AYP (Adequet Yearly Progress) and you must make it on the year you are nominated for.

The awards presentaton will be held on Nov. 3 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C..
