History and us

History is important. George Santayana said, “A country without a memory is like a country of madmen.” At first glance, this statement may seem metaphorical or figurative. But, in fact, it’s literally true. A madman (a very strange or disturbed person) who speaks to a lamppost does so because he does not comprehend the nature of a lamppost or that lampposts cannot hear or talk or reason. The madman does not understand what common sense experience has taught everyone else in the world about inanimate objects.

The same can be set for a nation that does not understand history. If, for example, a citizenry does not understand socialism and its history, the citizenry will not know that socialism has been tried repeatedly over the millennia, that it degrades prosperity, and, often, leads to oppression. A person who does not understand history looks at socialism like an insane person looks at a lamppost – without an understanding of what common sense experience has shown (or should have shown) us about socialism or the lamppost. That is why Santayana’s one-sentence epigram is exactly correct: History is important, lest we collectively wander through time – like a madman – without any sense of what the world’s collective experience has proven.

Socialism was the very first form of government tried in America. In the first couple of years after colonists arrived at Jamestown, all property was communal. All food was kept at a central storehouse for everyone to share.

But, because there was no reward for working harder, no one worked hard. The result was the Winter of Starving in 1609-10. Of the 500 colonists in Jamestown, 440 died. The survivors ate rats and dogs. One man killed a woman and ate her. He was later burned. And, at least by socialism’s standards, the Jamestown experience was a success. For far less successful adventures into pure socialism (also known as communism), see the histories of the Soviet Union, Communist China, Cambodia, East Germany, North Korea, Cuba and a host of others. These are histories steeped in starving and repression.

All of this is why many, including the Observer, look with utter dismay and disbelief as the federal government takes over America’s banks, car companies, and the entire health care system.  The disbelief is not the result of the government’s power-grab, for it is the nature of governments to try and become bigger and more powerful. The disbelief is wrought by the complacency of the American masses, which stand by unknowingly, like sheep, as their prosperity and freedom are carried away before their eyes under the banner of economic recovery.

It’s madness. Literally.

dj blogaholic - your use of '&' in lieu of 'and' is not the proper use of grammer. But you know what? I DON'T CARE! this is an opinion blog that allows those citizens the forum to make thier voices heard. Sure, some are harder to read than others but the opinion is what counts.

Common Sense - There used to be some level of 'national cirriculum' such as Civics where one learned about the Constitution and the operation of our government. If I recall correctly, it was mandatory to pass a comprehensive test regarding the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. If you didn't pass, you didn't graduate.

I believe that the decline in Education started in the mid-60's with the beginning of the removal of the Pledge and the expulsion of any mention of God and prayer. The decline accelerated with the establishment of the Dept. of Ed and then the NEA.

We constantly pour more money into education while the quality constanly decreases. Obviously, that is not working so it is time to try something else.

If critera were such that only people could post using correct spelling; tense; grammar; etc., 99.9% of the posters would be banned from participating in this forum !

Hukked-on-phonix-rejects-forum would be more appropriate for some threads here.

I get the jist of what most try & say, but, geez, some of the spelling makes you shake your head & wonder if some posters here ever saw the inside of a school building.

So sorry Old Codger. You obviously understood what I wrote, but I understand. Some morons may not be able to make the connection or understand the points made when an 'i' and 'e' are transposed. From now on I will have my dictionary handy and right before I post the comment, I will have my staff of editors proof-read and correct all spelling and ensure grammatically correct sentences and punctuation.

If this post does not stand up to your obvious superior scrutiny, I apologise. I have yet to hire the staff.

What my poor, but readable, spelling has to do with the content of my post is betond me.

Also, the education level in this country has been on the decline since the mid-70's.

Too much reliance has been put on meeting test scores and pushing people into college.

More needs to be put back into the basics and most of the testing needs to go away!!

Go back to some of the curriculum from the late 50's and 60's - actually teach and teach kids to think.

Not everyone needs to go to college - high schools should encourage techincal training as well. We need good qualified electricians and plumbers as much as we need people with four year degrees.

There is too much offered in high schools today - get back to basics and make it harder in high school and college.

And that curriculum needs to be a national one -- look at all the countries that rank above us in education - most have a national curriculum.

Anyway, my two-cents on that....

BassSlayer it is easy to sling words with no sense or logic.

The departments of education at state and federal level provide meaningful support to schools -- never said they were perfect.

Where did I attack...??

I guess talking points are better than just talking with no point.

I would be safe to say that my mind is more open to change and discussion than yours!!

I truly believe in our constitution and not some far-right or far-left view of what they believe it means.

And to me it is fairly simple.

If it is only the local Scool Board who controls the education of the local school kids, then what is the purpose of the Department of Education?

In typical liberal fashion, Common Sense deflects and obfusacates the statement. He/She is so invested in dem/leftist/lib politics that he/she cannot think for themselves and attack the person instead of providing a well-thought-out rebuttal.

These are the types that are in control for now. Petulant children one and all. They do not accept responsibility for anything.

We all need to call these people out every time they open thier mouths with talking points which is all they ever have.

Funny, I don't remember saying anything about being a liberal democrat, racism or hatemongering?!?!?!

There are a lot of banks in this country - the government aided some and some have already paid back the money they were given!

Get off this socialism scare - it is really getting tiresome.....

Who runs the local school system -- the local school board.

This is a good letter from the Observer. Since the federal government took over education in the form of the Department of Education, there has been a slow, steady and relentless decline in the education system. Nowadays, kids do not know our history and if they happen to get some education on our history, it is usually not is a good light.

There are segments of our population that are willfully blind and 'Common Sense' is one of the poster boys. Everything is political for them. If you are not a liberal democrat, you are wrong, you are a racist, you are a hate-monger and just about any other name they can conjure up.

The main problem we face is that these types of people are in the majority of congress. They care nothing for what is best for our country. They only care about thier power and how they can position themselves to retain it at the expense of the citizens that actually pay taxes.

When those that recieve government handouts outnumber those that foot the bill, it is a long walk on a short pier to oblivion.

Correction in my SPIRIVA post -

I may have put Medicard for the word
MEDICARE .

I always knew the government and pharmacies were in bed but this is a new LOW even for them-

Medicare agent has the drug listed in their Medicare D - Scrip Card Plan as
$476. a month, as opposed to $205 at USA Drug in Farmington.

After them paying certain amt. rest of year you continue paying premium plus
THEIR full price per script. 476.00

believe it

Lets' agree to disagree and let time tell.

Already freeze on Social Security -

Why not just do like the indians did and

put ole grmpa in a canoe and shove it

out to sea.

After 'this great health care plan' cuts

back benifits on Medicare (which we

pay monthly) ITS NOT FREE

haven't heard anything about decreasing

medicare monthly payment:)

Example: Coffee - used to be a three

Lb. can - now extremely smaller but

more expensive.

Can't make it any more simple than that.

Government in Bed With Pharmacies.
Equal pardners in crime.

Example: When looking for script card yesterday called medicare to ck out medicard D - script card.

Agent said med listed as $476 a month. When asked why then did USA Drug in Farmington have drug listed as 205. a mo. agent told me the government @ Pharmacies had come to 'agreement" on price. There were a list of pharmacies you would have to use.

It would be nice to hear more screaming about the insurance rape of the USA citizen (instead of the government) because they are a bigger problem.

You should look in the mirror when you say that.

Where have you been, in a cave?

The government has a financial interest in several large banks and General Motors and if they get the public option in health care, they will soon be the only option left and will control it too.

The fact that you try to deny this is untter madness....literally.
Common Sense posted on Thursday, October 15th, 2009 at 11:33 am
This is utter madness....literally!

The government has not taken over America's banks, it has not taken over the car companies, and it has not nor does it plan to take over the health care system.

Banks are failing and car companies are closing. Don't spread lies and half-truths.

As the quote goes, "All the knowledge in the world is of no use to fools."

Everyone, the knowledge is out there use is wisely - don' be the fool.
