Park Hills to discuss sewer crossing

With or without FEMA funds, Park Hills needs to repair an aerial sewer crossing across Flat River in the Haney Park area, the utility department has reported to the city.

Tonight, the city council will decide whether to wait for FEMA funding approval before making the repairs, or pay for the project now and hope to be reimbursed for 75 percent of the cost if the FEMA application is passed.

The city has applied for FEMA funds to repair and/or reinforce four aerial sewer crossings that span Flat River. However, utility officials say one is in such poor shape, it could not handle another flood like that of May 2009 without the risk of further damage and possible leakage of wastewater into the river. That could happen before FEMA decides whether to approve the city’s application for flood damage funds.

LOANA Contractors submitted the winning bid, which included an estimate of $16,000 for repair of this particular sewer crossing.

Also during its 7 p.m. regular monthly meeting in city hall, the council will review bids for the purchase of two police cruisers. Patrol car bid requests were issued for a 2010 Dodge Charger, a 2010 Chevrolet Impala 9C3 and 2010 Ford Crown Victoria.

The council will consider a request by the Guardian Security Company for a “merchant’s license patrol service license” to allow the company to provide uniformed security personnel for the Division of Family Services’ office on Staples Drive. The license is required by city ordinances.

During the visitor’s session, Dr. Desi Mayberry, superintendent of the Central School District, will ask the city to support the district’s request for a $4 million bond issue to build an 18,000-square-feet addition to Central Elementary School. The addition would house seven new classrooms, a set of restrooms and a multi-purpose room. Increases in enrollment and a favorable bond market with low interest rates will allow the district to issue the bonds without causing a tax increase.
