MAC to host drive-In theater Friday

PARK HILLS — Blankets, lawn chairs, popcorn and soda will be found at Mineral Area College, when an outdoor viewing of the famous ‘80s flick “Gremlins” is shown on the eve of All Hallow’s Eve.

Team MAC is organizing a Halloween Drive-In to show “Gremlins” at 7 p.m., Friday in front of the Technology Building on the Park Hills campus. A $5 donation is requested (children under 5 are admitted free), which covers the movie, soda and popcorn (while supplies last). The proceeds benefit American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. “We wanted a kid-friendly movie,” Johnson said. “And Gremlins looked fun. It had been awhile since our committee members had seen it, so frankly, we’re all looking forward to seeing it again and bringing our kids.”

Johnson said if the weather is rainy, the movie will move indoors to the Rice Lecture Hall. Otherwise, everyone can bring their blankets and lawn chairs, and enjoy the popcorn and soda on hand.

“Gremlins,” released in 1984 and rated PG, stars Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Corey Feldman, Harry Carey Jr., with Zach Galligan playing the lead character, Billy Peltzer. When Billy gets an exotic gremlin from China named “Gizmo,” he only has to follow three strict rules: Keep Gizmo from getting wet, no food after midnight, and keep Gizmo out of bright light. Naturally, Billy finds out what disasters can happen when the rules are violated, and the entire town is turned inside out.
