Two big reasons for celebrating ... Evelyn Plummer celebrated her 98th birthday this past Tuesday, Nov. 10. And she and her husband, Lester Plummer, also celebrate their 81st (that’s correct, 81st!) wedding anniversary that same day! No big celebration was held, just family stopping by to share the occasion. It’s still not too late for a card shower for this wonderful couple. Just fill their mailbox to overflowing with good wishes!
A reading riot ... Three actors, including M.A.C.’s drama director Rick Giles, will take the audience on a whirlwind ride as they perform All The Great Books (Abridged). The fast-paced show features 86 of literature’s greatest hits condensed into 90 minutes of hilarity. The show will be performed in the Mineral Area college community theater from November 19th through the 21st. Doors open at 7 p.m. and curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available now at the M.A.C. Bookstore at $7 each, or $3 for Sr. Citizens and MAC Students. If still available, tickets will be available at the door for purchase.
Alzheimer’s: There is help ... A free informational program on Alzheimer’s will be held in the dining room of Parkland Health Center on Wednesday evening, Nov. 18 from 6-8 p.m. The evening is designed especially for those who: have a family history of Alzheimer’s; are now caregivers for a family member; or who have concerns about the disease. Those attending will meet local service providers and learn about available Alzheimer’s resources and how to detect early onset. Speakers will include Vikrant Mittal, MD of the BJC Medical Group, Nancy Birtley, RN,MSN, Geriatric and Alzheimer nurse, Psychiatric Care and Wellness Specialists of St. Louis, and Stephanie Rohlfs-Young, Outreach Director of the Alzheimer’s Association. Pre-registration is required by calling 1-800-272-3000 or online at www.alzstl.org. The program is sponsored by the Leadbelt Memory Walk committee and the St. Louis Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Smiths back home ... Dennis and Pattie Smith returned last week from visiting their son, Jacob, and his family in Cape St. Claire (Annapolis), Maryland. During their visit they attended a band competition for the oldest and spent time catching up with Jacob and all three girls. Their daughter-in-law is currently deployed to Afghanistan. Dennis and Pattie also visited Washington DC and went to the newest Smithsonian Museum, the National Museum for the American Indian, a stop they highly recommend. They also had an appointment with U.S. Rep Jo Ann Emerson where they discussed matters of economic development for the area and veterans’ issues. During the trip they stopped on the way out and back at Dennis’ parents’ home in Indiana.
Home to greet new son ... Corporal Caleb Owens, USMC, recently arrived in Farmington on leave from his tour in Afghanistan to wait with his wife Stefanie for the birth of their first child. Chase James Owens made his appearance on Sept. 21st, and weighed 8 lbs, 7ozs, and was 22 inches long. Grandparents are the late Kirk and Edra Owens, Carol Johnson, and Dewayne and Carmen Johnson. Great-grandmothers are Dee Owens and Fran Johnson.
On Saturday, October 3rd, Jeff and Jamie Johnson, and Jeff and Danielle Owens gave a wonderful surprise pre-deployment party for Caleb, as he left October 21st for Afghanistan. Approximately 50 people attended the party, many of whom were Stefanie and Caleb’s high school friends. Both Stefanie and Caleb are graduates of Farmington High School, where Caleb was active in basketball, football and track. The families on both sides asked to thank all those who made Caleb’s party such a success. They ask for prayers for Caleb’s safety and for Stefanie and baby Chase while they wait at home.

Farmington Travelers ... Sonny and Elma Jennings visited family as part of their two week trip in October. They met their son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Deb, at their mountain cabin near West Jefferson, NC. for an enjoyable weekend, then returned with them to their home in Cary, N.C. While there they visited with their granddaughter and her husband, Amy and Ryan Keeter; great-granddaughter, Susannah, and, for the first time, got to meet their great-grandson, Markus.
On the return trip, they drove to Georgetown, Ky, and spent several days with Elma’s sister, Doris and husband, Bob Griffith and later toured the Louisville slugger Museum in Louisville, Ky. on their way to Marion, Ohio, where they visited with another Overall sister, Norma Jacob. While the visits with family were great, the weather was not, as all but three days were either rainy or misty.
