Statistics show nearly one in four Missourians still fail to regularly wear a safety belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. Among those least likely to buckle up are young males, pickup truck drivers and passengers, people who live in rural areas and nighttime drivers.

The Farmington Police Department announced Wednesday that it will join with law enforcement agencies statewide on Nov. 18 in “Click It or Ticket” to crack down on Missouri safety belt law violators and reduce roadway fatalities.

Failure to regularly wear a safety belt can be deadly. In 2007 a driver in a Missouri traffic crash had a 1 in 32 change of being killed in they were not wearing a safety belt. In cases where the driver wore a seat belt, he chance of being killed as 1 in 1,294.

Chief of Police Rick Baker, Farmington Police, reminds drivers that regular safety belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes.
