Several area churches are working on helping families during the holiday season.

St. Paul Lutheran Church is serving 14 families so far this year with food for the holidays. The church helps families for both Thanksgiving and Christmas that are referred to them by an organization or church members themselves.

The church has several women who help fill baskets for the families. Church members donate food and are given a guideline of what to buy. They ask for boxed dinners, canned soup and gravy, vegetables, macaroni and cheese and similar items. They also have meat, milk and bread donated.

The baskets are prepared the day before the holiday and are delivered the same day.

The Farmington First Assembly of God works with Angel Food ministries, which is a national project started in 1994, according to their web site: www.angelfoodministries.com. The First Assembly of God purchases 25 boxes, and each box feeds a family of three to four.

The church delivers the food to families of children who ride the bus to church. It’s a way for the church to thank families for allowing their children to attend the church.

Pastor Kevin Davis said not all children that attend church do so with their families. This is a way to thank the families of the children for the ministry opportunity.

The First Baptist Church in Farmington is collecting for their Christmas food baskets. Families call the church office and put their name on a list to receive a basket. The church can only take so many families. However, the additional names are given to another organization so those families will be helped.

Church members bring in items after their October Harvest collection beginning the first Sunday in November for the Christmas baskets. Each week Karen Moore, secretary at the First Baptist Church, puts a list of items the church is collecting in their weekly newsletter.

Each Christmas basket will have staple items for the families such as peanut butter and jelly, sugar, flour, vegetables and many other things. Moore said that some church members call the office and want to donate meat for the families.

The church will begin accepting names the first part of December. They have maintained an average of 22 per year, however, the last couple  of years they have seen new names. They only accept names of families in the Farmington School District.

The church has volunteers help fill the baskets and deliver the same day. This year baskets will be filled on Dec. 22.

New Heights Church is planning to adopt several area families to give them Christmas this year. Pastor Rocky Good said the family the church adopted last year was overwhelmed with everything. This year they will have several families and will gather and give food baskets, Christmas presents and clothes.

For Thanksgiving, New Heights Church has already started collecting canned food items to be given to families in the area. The church will also be doing bell ringing for United Way.

If your church has a tradition of helping during the holidays, let the Farmington Press know and we’ll include your tradition, whether new or time-honored, in a future story about giving during the holidays. You can contact the Press office at (573) 756-8927.
