Farmington principal nominated for state award

School board announces filing dates for elections

FARMINGTON — When the Farmington School Board met Tuesday evening. Matt Ruble, high school principal was recognized for his nomination for Principal of the Year. Other items on the agenda included recognizing students’ testing achievements, and purchasing a new bus. The board also heard reports on Missouri Options and annual performance achievements.

The board announced filings for the school board elections will open at 8 a.m. Dec. 15 and will close at 5 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2010. For more information on filing call the Farmington School Building at 701-1300.

Students in the Farmington School District were recognized for their achievements on the 2009 EOC and MAP Tests.

Students recognized in third grade math were Rylan LaChance, Jacob Bales, Sarah Doty, Bailey Wood and Sean DeGuire. Danielle Fox was recognized for third grade communication arts. Fourth grade math students recognized were Alexander England, Chloe Barton and Ryan Parson.  

Algebra I EOC students recognized were Mitchell Weddle and Kylee Hollinger. Communication Arts 2 EOC students recognized were Lauren Beavers, Laura Byington, Emily Miller, Elliot Wicks and Kristin Wunning. John McNamara was recognized for the Biology EOC.

Roosevelt Elementary recognized Ethel Turley as the Heartland Hero of the month. Principal Susie Rohrer said Turley comes in excited each day and has made a huge impact on the students.

Kay Giessing was recognized as the Featured Teacher for the month. She is in her 31st year and has taught third grade at Washington-Franklin and Jefferson and is now at Roosevelt Elementary. She was nominated by fellow staff members and is a Title One teacher for the school district.

Farmington High School Principal Matt Ruble was recognized by the district for being nominated as one of eight for the Principal of the Year. He is representing the Southeast Missouri Region in the nomination.

He will receive the regional award at the state conference in the spring. During that conference the State Principal of the Year will be announced at Lake of the Ozarks. Some of the programs that have been implemented at the high school since Ruble became principal are High Schools That Work, College Now Program, Project Lead the Way, On-Track Program, CNA Program, AVID, Academic Labs, ACT Study Groups, Freshman Success Teams, AT&T Aspire Grant, Wired Grant and Building Leadership Groups.

Assistant Superintendent Jeff Williams gave the annual performance report for the Farmington School District. It was released by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on Oct. 20. The district met 14 of the performance indicators. Seven of those 14 are directly related to the 2009 MAP Tests.

Debra Aubuchon, director of the At-Risk programs and counseling gave a report on the dropout and graduation rates. This year the Farmington School District had a dropout rate of 2.7 for the 2008 to 2009 school year. The state average is 5.1. Farmington had a graduation rate of 89.4 and the state average is 88.3.

The district recently received approval from the Department of Education, Division of Special Education to spend ARRA funds on the purchase of a school bus. Two bids were received and the board approved the bid of $90,925 from Ponder Equipment.

ARRA was approved to help with the purchase of the new bus. That money will cover 86.15 percent of the cost. The district will only pay $12,593. The bus must be primarily used to transport students with special needs.

Farmington School District will hold their next meeting on Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Farmington School Board Building.
