The annual event begins with a celebration at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in Leadington Plaza. A special musical performance is planned. The traditional tree lighting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Come early, as the tree lighting sometimes is held immediately after the entertainment.
The parade begins at 6 p.m. and travels about two miles to the Farmer’s Market in Park Hills. Santa and Mrs. Claus will meet with children there, and city officials will light the Park Hills Christmas tree. Hot cocoa will be served and there will be additional performances and special activities.
A traveling trophy goes to the winning entry. The trophy, donated by Classic Awards and Gifts, goes to the best-decorated float until next year’s parade.
Entrants are encouraged to decorate their floats according to the theme, however, it is not a requirement to be part of the parade. Only those floats that follow the theme will be considered for the trophy.
No float may have a live Santa, Mrs. Claus, St. Nick, Father Christmas, or similar person on board. Santa and Mrs. Claus will serve as the parade’s grand marshals.
Reindeer, elves, stuffed Santas and similar Christmas characters are allowed. Lighting is encouraged, but not required. No alcoholic beverages are permitted. Any float using a generator as a power source must also carry a fire extinguisher.
Cost to enter is a $10 cash donation to the Annual Foster Children’s Christmas Party. To enter, complete an official entry form and return it with your donation to the Chamber office, 5 Municipal Drive, Park Hills, 63601.
Entry forms are available at the Chamber office or by calling 573-431-1051.
The deadline for entries is Nov. 30. Entrants will receive a map of the parade route and their line-up number before the parade. Entries received after the deadline will be placed at the end of the parade in the order in which they are received. All floats must be in line before 6 p.m.
All are welcome to participate, including, but not limited to, businesses, elected officials, civic organizations, school clubs, dance/gymnastic/karate academies, school drill teams, spirit clubs, dance teams, cheerleaders, sports teams, choral groups, churches and bands.
For more information, call the chamber office.
