FARMINGTON — Farmington Church of the Nazarene’s Pastor Terry Turner has the bragging rights this year.

He took home the Cooking Clergy Contest traveling trophy at the Help the Hungry Bake Sale Saturday. His cake brought in the most money for the Farmington food pantries. It was auctioned off for $730.

This was the first year for the Cooking Clergy Contest. “It was a phenomenal success,” Bake Sale Organizer Chris Landrum said.

St. Paul Lutheran Church Pastor James King baked a Chocolate Dream Cake, which Nancy Krekeler bought for $350.

Even though she knows the cake will be good, she plans to give it to her son and his family. She’s had some of the pastor’s cooking before but not his cake.

“It weighs a ton,” she said, as she chatted with two of the bake sale’s money-takers, Jayne McLeod and Jetty Reese.

Krekeler walked into the bake sale with the idea of getting one auction item. “This is my donation to the food pantry,” she said.

When asked if she thought she had scored any points with the pastor, she said no but then added, “I can only hope he includes me in his prayers tonight.”

This was the fourth annual Help the Hungry Bake Sale. This year it was held in the St. Joseph Catholic School Church gymnasium.

The money raised and canned food will be given to the Farmington Ministerial Alliance and St. Vincent De Paul food pantries.

Landrum had worried there wouldn’t be enough baked items but many people brought their goods in the morning of the sale.

“I think it will be a very successful bake sale,” she said. It was too early to estimate if they would raise more than $18,000 — which was the amount raised last year.

Landrum said 14 churches, as well as civic organizations and individuals participated. Eight churches assembled a booth.

Pam Carrow, who worked St. Joseph Church’s Daily Bread booth, said people crowded in at 9 a.m. and the baked items went a lot faster this year. Many people came in at 8 a.m. when the cafe opened for breakfast.

Linda Ray was at the Memorial United Methodist Church’s booth with Carla Taylor and Alice Johnson. When they first started, tables, shelves and even a refrigerator were packed with baked goods like cakes and muffins. They were down to only a few items by 11:30 a.m. Other booths were empty by then but there were still plenty of cookies and candy left.

The Free Will Baptist Church had Candy Land, which included Gingerbread men and houses.

The First Assembly of God Church had the Sugar-free and Gluten-free booth, which did very well. Their girl’s missionette group also baked the cakes for the cake walk.

The cake walk was a big hit for children. Olivia Combs was thrilled that she won a plate of cupcakes which she was going to share with her sister, Lilly.

Ella Garrett won two plates of cupcakes and was still playing.

“She thinks it is a lot of fun,” her grandma said.

Also, inside the cafe, there was cookie-decorating for children. The cafe sold breakfast items and then lunch items like chili and hot dogs.

Landrum was thrilled when C&C Wood Furnace showed up with an outdoor wood furnace filled to the brim with food.

There was a silent auction and a live auction. Mark Toti of KREI/KTJJ auctioned items off that several businesses had donated. The auction items ranged from a cake of the month for six months to a weekend get-away at the Lake of the Ozarks. Local celebrities like U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson and Farmington Mayor Stuart “Mit” Landrum baked goods, too.

Sponsors of the event included First State Community Bank, New Era Bank, Ozarks Federal Savings and Loan, First Bank, Belgrade State Bank, KREI/KTJJ, Farmington Press, Maloney, Wright and Robbins, Mineral Area Office Supply and Burgess Excavating.
