PARK HILLS — With an eye toward the coming holidays, Mineral Area College classified staff members are planning their annual Christmas Celebration, complete with refreshments, holiday singing, a reading by Mrs. Claus, and a visit from Santa.

The holiday tradition is set for 5 p.m. on Dec. 1 in the Arts and Sciences Building, and is, as usual, free and open to the public.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone gather for the Christmas Celebration this year,” said Lisa Johnson, who as Executive Administrative Assistant for MAC’s dean of Arts & Sciences, is a member of classified staff and this year’s Christmas Committee chair. “We enjoy organizing the fun as much as people enjoy the treats, music and festivities. It’s a nice kick-off to the holiday season. This year we are concentrating on the children and making their holiday season a happy one,” Johnson added.

Debbie Portell, interim assistant director for the college’s Financial Aid Office and president of MAC Classified Staff, will emcee this year’s Christmas event. The MAC Marvels, a choral group made up of college employees and students directed by Greg Graf, will be singing three “very entertaining” songs. Michael Goldsmith will be conducting the MAC Jazz Ensemble and there will be a few selections from the MAC Vocal Department.

Children will be invited to participate in a sing-along and will light the tree. Mrs. Claus will read “The Night before Christmas” to the children, and Santa Claus himself will be available after the program to hear requests from the children.

This year’s fundraiser is a “Barbie” Toy Drive. All new and gently-used toys will be collected and presented to the Season of Hope, run by St. Francois County Community Partnership. Last year the community partnership fielded more than 1,600 requests from children for various needs and wants. Please contact Lisa Johnson, (573) 518-2218, if you would like to make a donation to the toy drive.
