Turkeys and dressing at Thanksgiving and every bell, ribbon and bow that appears during the Christmas season is a reminder that some of our loved ones are not here to enjoy the holidays with us.
For those who have lost loved ones, whether recently or in years past, the holidays are a painful reminder of the empty space that accompanies the death of a loved one. Getting through those holidays is the focus of a grief seminar Saturday at the LIFE Center, 725 E. Karsch Blvd., Farmington.
The free, two-hour program starts at 10 a.m. and is co-hosted by Rev. Tisha Mundy, chaplain and counselor at AmHeart Hospice and Linda Shearin-Stout of Shearin Funeral Home. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.
Participants are asked to preregister by Friday by calling the toll-free number at 1- 877-756-0554.
Refreshments will be served and gift bags will be distributed. Participants will make a keepsake memory candle in honor of someone they have lost. Materials will be provided.
The morning includes educational materials, tips for coping with grief during the holiday season and information about the stages of grief. There will be opportunity for one-on-one and group discussion.
“We’ve all shared a loss, so we have common ground,” Shearin-Stout said. “No matter if the loss is recent or long ago, it still affects us.”
In previous years, participants have included those who have lost a parent, child or spouse. Regardless of the loss, the seminar has helped them she said.
Health care and hospice workers are also welcome, Shearin-Stout said..
Grieving people who do not feel comfortable in a group setting are welcome to come pick up educational materials.
The candles have a lot of meaning for participants, Shearin-Stout said.
“Making the memory candle in honor of their loved one is very special for them,” she said. “Some set it at their loved one’s table setting in remembrance.”
Anyone with questions may call 1-877-756-0554 or 573-358- 2354.
