PARK HILLS — Plans to build the next Habitat for Humanity home will go on as planned despite the recent death of one of the future home’s family members.

Jim “Bimbo” Bryan, 39, died Dec. 26 at his home surrounded by family members. He had been ill since Thanksgiving.

Linda Dickerson, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of St. Francois County, said she has received several phone calls from people who feared the Bryan family would no longer get their home. She said that is not the case.

She said Habitat has reaffirmed their commitment to the Bryan family which include Shelby Bryan and their two teenage sons, Calvin and Petey.

“Our prayers are with them,” she said.

Before his death, she assured Jim that Habitat had every intention of following through with the commitment of building his family the home that had been promised.

“He was so thankful to know that even if he couldn’t enjoy his new home that his wife and kids were still going to be able to get in the home that he so badly wanted for his wife and two boys,” she said.

As one Habitat volunteer said it “is a project filled with love.”

A ground-breaking ceremony is still scheduled for 2:45 p.m. Jan. 15 inside the Central High School Field House.

The home will be constructed in Park Hills on Allen Street and will consist of three bedrooms, one and a half baths, vaulted ceilings. The sponsor of the house is Thrivent Builds, which has awarded $61,750 toward construction of the house. The Lutheran group will supply 50 percent of the volunteers, but volunteers are still needed.

Dickerson said Jim, who was an Army veteran, was injured in a vehicle accident in July of 2008 and was left a quadriplegic. He was confined to a wheelchair, but that you never saw him without a smile on his face.

For more information on Habitat for Humanity of St. Francois County, Inc. or how to become a donor or volunteer, call Dickerson at 573-760-1702 or check out the Web at http://www.hfhofsfc.org

Habitat for Humanity of St. Francois County, Inc. was formed in 1997 and to date has built in partnership with 11 families to help them to become successful homeowners.

The homes are not free. Families have to help build and then pay monthly mortgage payments to the local Habitat. Habitat makes no profit, and charges no interest, but every penny Habitat spends on the home is recouped when the owners of the homes pay monthly mortgages just like any other homeowner.

I would like to say we do not know this family, but after reading this my husband and I knew we wanted to help as much as we can. We can not help out with money, but my husband is layed off right now and has the time to help build this dream home for this family. I pray that for those men or women who are layed off or have time that you too could help those in need like this family. God Bless!

It's good to know that the Bryan family will have their home.

I know a family who has a Habitat home; they have conquered many obstacles and have never buckled under the challenges life has thrown at them. They were very deserving of the house that eventually became their home.

I applaud the Habitat for Humanity organization and those who see that the mission continues.
