A record number of federal child exploitation cases in eastern Missouri in 2007, the arrest and conviction of pedophile Michael Devlin, and at least 20 child sex abuse and/or child pornography cases in St. Francois and surrounding counties led the Daily Journal to take a close look at the problem of child sex exploitation and what can be done to stop the abuse.

Our five-day series reveals the extent of the problem, looks at investigation and prosecution, explains the laws and policies regarding sex offenders, identifies the risks predators pose to youth on the Internet and discusses what is being done to prevent future sex abuse and help those who have been victimized.

Victims and offenders who were interviewed for this story live in or have ties to St. Francois, Washington, Iron, Madison or Ste. Genevieve counties. To avoid re-victimizing those who have been abused, the Daily Journal will not use the real names of victims and offenders who have been interviewed for this series.

Sunday's stories put the problem into perspective and offer insight into the lives of a victim and an offender.
